DEACON R. T. STILLMAN
On Saturday, July 29, after an illness of nearly five months, Deacon Ransom T. Stillman peacefully passed to his reward, aged 79 years and 5 months. Deceased was born in Hopkinton, R. I., in 1820. He was the sixth of ten children born to Phineas and Thankful Gardner Stillman. At the age of 14 he was converted and was one of 144 who were baptized and united with the First S. D. B. church of Hopkinton, during a great revival conducted by Elder Matthew Stillman, assisted by Elder N. V. Hull. In the spring of 1836, as an apprentice he entered the employ of his brother, B. G. Stillman, a harness maker at New London, Conn. In November, 1837, he moved with his brother to DeRuyter, N. Y., remaining there five years, when he removed to Unadilla Forks and established himself in the business of harness making where he continued to reside for ten years. He then moved to Leonardsville, conducting the same line of business until his removal to West Edmeston where he was principally in farming until 1891, when with his children he came to this village which has since been his home. October 23, 1848, he was married to Miss Eunice E. Crandall, with whom he lived most happily until her death in May, 1888. At Leonardsville in the fall of 1858, Mr. Stillman was ordained to the office of deacon, the ordination sermon having been delivered by Rev. C. M. Lewis, consecrating prayer by Rev. J. M. Todd. Deacon Stillman retained his membership at Leonardsville until about the year 1860, when he united with the church at West Edmeston, of which body be remained a member until his death. From those who knew personally the deceased, no words of eulogy are necessary. His many years of life are like an open book known and read by all men. He was zealous in all good works, a strong advocate of temperance reform and all that tended to raise the standard of religious and moral life. It may be truthfully said that his conduct was always consistent with his profession. Funeral services were held at his late home Tuesday, Aug. 1, conducted by Rev. Madison Harry, assisted by Rev. Mr. Newbury and Rev. J. M. Todd. The remains were taken to West Edmeston for burial beside his loved companion. Of the immediate family there survive two daughters, the Misses Lizzie and Hattie Stillman, and two sons, Charles and LaMont, the latter of whom resides at Unadilla Forks.
