At her home in Alfred Centre,N. Y., Dec. 19, 1893, of pneumonia, Mrs. Lavinia Stillman Potter, aged 83 years and 5 months.
She was the daughter of David Stillman, and was born in Petersburg, N. Y., July 19, 1810. In 1829 she was married to Mr. David Potter, whom she survived 30 years. Her only child, a daughter, died when fourteen years of age. Soon after her marriage Mrs. Potter publicly professed faith in Christ and united with the First Alfred Church, of which she remained until her death a faithful and devoted member. For the past thirty years her own feeling of loneliness has caused her heart to go out in sympathy for the poor and friendless. It is estimated that she has made and sent to the home of the friendless in New York City no less than one hundred quilts, beside many other things of usefulness and comfort. It was all working for the Lord. It is blessed to feel that after a pure and useful life God has taken one whom he loved to the heavenly home. B. C. D.

Amanda Melvina Stillman
Born: 17 May 1814
Place: Petersburg, NY
Died: 14 Sep 1901
Place: Alfred, NY

"The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 57, No 39, p 622, Sep. 30, 1901.

In Alfred, N. Y., Sept. 14, 1901, Amanda Melvina Stillman.

She was born in Petersburg, N. Y., May 17, 1814. When she was four years old, her parents, David and Lillis Rose Stillman, moved to Alfred. Her father at once built the house, now the oldest in Alfred, which has ever since been her home. She was one of the few of Alfred's earliest pioneers who have remained to see the development of the town. She was baptized in early womanhood by Eld. N. V. Hull, and joined the First Alfred church, in whose fellowship she has since remained. Aunt Amanda, as she was known by all, was refined, genial and warm-hearted, ever ready to give assistance to others. Her time for many years was given to fine embroidery work, for which she was famous and for which she had orders from all over the East. She was bright, witty and cheery, and many of her quaint little poems are remembered by her friends. She was a Christian by faith and practice. Funeral service conducted by Pastor Randolph. Text, Rom. 15: 55. L. C. R.

"The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 62, No 30, p 477, July 23, 1906.
John Chandler Green was born in Independence, N. Y., Feb. 10, 1827.
He was the only son of Isaiah and Betsy Bassett Green. Of his four sisters, only Mrs. David R. Stillman remains. The eight brothers and sisters of his father's family were pioneer settlers, occupying most of the land on which Alfred and Alfred Station now stand, and being prominent in founding Church and University. The family came from Berlin, N. Y., whither they had emigrated from Rhode Island, the line being traced back seven generations to John Green, of Quidnessett, R. I. Chandler attended Alfred Academy several years, then entered business life, first at Independence, afterward at Alfred. March 16, 1848, he was happily married to Emily Sherman. Two of their children have survived to give their father tender care in his declining years. He was baptized when twelve years of age by Elder Stillman Coon, and joined the Independence Church, from which his membership was later transferred to Alfred. He was frail as a young man, but through careful and temperate living, grew stronger and outstripped his more rugged comrades by living to almost four score. He enjoyed the universal confidence of his fellow men and was trusted with positions of honor and responsibility in church and community. After a severe sickness, he died June 25, 1906. Services were conducted at the home of his daughter, Mrs. V. A. Baggs, June 28, his son David also having been with him in his sickness. The pastor's text was from John 1: 47: "Behold an Israelite indeed in whom is no guile." This well describes his character which was pure, unselfish, kind, earnest and loyal to truth. To us he seems to have come very near the perfect pattern, a living evidence of Christianity, a proof of eternal life.
