Edgar Jr, known as "Bud", began college at Cornell after attending five different boarding schools (only to be outdone by his son, who attended six) and playing some very good tennis. In mid-1941, before America went into WII, He left Cornell to join the American Field Service as an ambulance driver with the British Army in North Africa. After a year, he joined the US Army as an infantryman, was in the invasion of France (but not at Normandy -- at Nice - the weather is so much nicer) and was in Europe through 1945. After returning, he finished college, got married, was briefly a reporter, had children, and was then an English teacher (getting divorced and remarried along the way) until he retired in about 1973. Except for a few mistaken years in Connecticut, he lived all his adult life in NYC.
