Elias, Esquire, Portsmouth, Newcastle, born circa 1616, son of Elias who came to New England from the parish of St. Andrews Undershaft, London. Freeman's oath here 3 July 1632 and soon at Salem.
Elias, Jr., was clerk of the county court and prominent in Salem until he removed to Portsmouth, Comissioner.t.e.s.e. at Portsmouth in 1658; of Portsmouth when granted administartion on father's estate in Essex Co. 30 Sept. 1662. Selectman almost continuously 1659-1695; town clerk 1664-5–1681; Recorder County court, Comissioner, Associate and Magistrate for Maine and New Hampshire; Deputy 1667-8, 1671, 1673, 1677, 1690, 1692, [p.662] 1693 (not sworn), 1695. Lieutenant for Great Island 1673; served under command executive Captain Richard Cutts as Captain of Great Island Fort 21 Feb. 1675-6; taxed as Captain October 1691; called Major 1692. Councillor 1680 (secretary.). Judge in court of Common Pleas. Lists 311b, 312c, 313ae, 317, 323, 324(2), 326c, 329, 330ab, 331abc, 356L (Portsm.), 46, 48-50, 52-54, 55b, 57, 59, 80-84, 94, 96. He deposed in August 1686, age 70 ; in February 1694-5, age 79, ab. Portsmouth courts in 1655. His wife was Mary 1662, 1672, (Perley names his 1st wife as Deborah Wolfe); he married by 1684 Mary, widow of who was a midwife in August 1685; married last Mrs. Lucy (Treworgye) (Chadbourne) Wills (List 215b). Will, 18 (died 19) Dec. 1695, names wife Lucy (executor), her children, his grandaughter Ruth Tarlton and her sons Elias and William Tarleton; Mr. Samuel Donnell and Mr. John Shapleigh overseers. Her will, 1700–1708, gives to her own children and to her grandson Thomas Landall £10 due from Richard Stileman (jr.) if received, or the bill for £10 if she died before recovering it. Only known child: Elias, baptised at Salem 15 Mar. 1640-1. A daughter who died s.p., daughter-in-law, or granddaughter, List 335a, ‘the seat where Major Stileman's daughter satt,’ March 1693-4.
