Newspaper Obituary: EDWIN AMOS STILLMAN July 13, 1813 - July 14, 1892
Born on July 13, 1813, Edwin Amos was a son of a widowed mother. Early in life he began to support and educate himself.
During his 13 and 18 years, he went to the West Indies. After his stay there, he went to study at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
An article written in 1833 by Captain Charles Stewart, entitled "The Duty and Safety of Immediate Emancipation," inspired him to write antislavery articles. During that summer, he
met our beloved and fearless poet, J.G. Whitteir.
Mr. Stillman went back to his hometown. Even though there were only three avowed abolitionists in town, he invited speakers to come and speak. Many times, the mobs would
attack the meetings he held.
In 1835, disgusted with the church’s view on slavery, he turned his attention to the study of Civil Engineering and a year later received a job with NY/ERR. Soon after, he was
offered a position of surveyor and assistant engineer in locating that part of the Genessee Valley Canal between Mt. Morris and Olean. He was charged with the management of
ten miles in the County of Allegheny. His success was widely complemented.
Soon after being hired by Hirim P. Mills and his brothers, he discovered a conspiracy against the public by them. He informed the Government of the situation and they set an
investigation in effect. The Mills Brothers were dismissed.
On December 20, 1842, he married Jane Cochrane, daughter of the Rev. James Cochrane. Rev. James is the president of Dearborn College.
In 1854, he went to Springwater to collect a debt and found the only way to collect was to take a quantity of timber (the debtor gave him the use of the mill). Knowing nothing
about the business, he undertook it and to much surprise to his friends, he began a career of a lumberman.
He moved his family to Candice. During his residence there, he took an active part in politics - Republican Party. He was postmaster under President Lincoln, held office of Justice
of the Peace, and his last political affiliation was with the Prohibition Party.
