Karl Green Stillman of 3 Moss St., Pawcatuck, Conn., died in his home on July 2, 1984 at the age of 88. He was born May 12, 1896 in Pawcatuck, the son of the late Alberti R. and Tacie E. (Larkin) Stillman.
Karl Stillman spent much of his lifetime serving the communities of Westerly, R.I., and Pawcatuck. He served in leadership positions in a number of civic and community organizations and was prominent in his church, the Pawcatuck Seventh Day Baptist Church in Westerly, as well as in the Seventh Day Baptist denomination.
He graduated from Stonington High School in 1913 and received a B.S. degree from Dartmouth College in 1917. Following his military service, he began employment with the Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford, Conn.
In 1923, he took advantage of an opportunity to return home to Pawcatuck to work in the accounting department of the Cottrell Company, continuing with that company for 32 years. During that time he served as assistant secretary, as treasurer, and also as director.
Mr. Stillman had a fascination with history and with family heritage. He wrote the booklet, Seventh Day Baptists in New England, 1671-1971, which was distributed at the time of the 300th anniversary of Seventh Day Baptists; and a booklet entitled Anecdotes, which gives more of a whimsical account of incidents involving members of the Pawcatuck SDB church over its history.
Due to his convictions, Karl became deeply involved in the work and life of his church and denomination. He served for many years as president of the Pawcatuck Seventh Day Baptist Church and was chairman of its Centennial Celebration Committee in 1940. In 1929, he became treasurer of the Seventh Day Baptist Missionary Society which is headquartered in Westerly, serving in that capacity for 49 years. Almost single handedly, he restored the Society to a strong financial position after it had suffered severe damage to its assets in the 1929 stock market crash. He also served as a trustee of the Memorial Fund and as president of the General Conference in 1948.
In addition, Mr. Stillman had been prominent for a long period of time with the Westerly Hospital, and has served as president of the Westerly-Pawcatuck YMCA, treasurer of the Pawcatuck Fire District for 49 years, president of the River Cemetery Company for many years, chairman of the Stonington School Committee, and treasurer of the Pawcatuck Service Unit of the Salvation Army. He also had been director of the Hospital Service Corporation of Rhode Island (Blue Cross), a member of the executive committee of the New England Council for Economic Development and chairman of its Rhode Island division, and a trustee and secretary of the Pawcatuck World War Memorial Association, Inc.
Mr. Stillman also served as chairman of the Advisory Board of the Industrial National Bank of Rhode Island at its Westerly Savings and Loan Association.
He was recipient of the 1971 Community Service Award from the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce; and in 1982, he received the Brotherhood Award from the Westerly Lodge of B'nai B'rith.
Mr. Stillman was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Carleton) Stillman, who died July 26. In addition, he is survived by two nieces and two cousins. A memorial service was conducted at the meeting house of the Pawcatuck Seventh Day Baptist Church in Westerly on July 5, 1984, by Pastor Dale E. Rood.     DER
