Remembrances of my Uncle - Glenn Carroll Stillman

-- from Bill Stillman

In over 98 years, Glen Carroll Stillman was witness to almost all the 20th century events - airplanes, automobiles, two world wars, the Great Depression, Korea, Viet-nam, telephones, electricity, the internet, cellular phone, beepers, and computers. Surely all these events touch Glen in some way.

Glen was my father's oldest brother. My first memories of him are from the 1940's - my parents taking us on the train to Uncle Glenn's house in New Orleans so we could go to the Mardi Gras.

Glenn had a nice house with a yard on Cadiz Street in New Orleans.

While visiting my grandmother in Biloxi, I recall riding to the store in his car - we'd shop for groceries - Glen would buy some flowers and we'd stop by the house of his ex-wife - Annabel - to deliver them - quite often he left in tears. Annabel and Glenn had a decades-long dispute over Glen's mother - my grandmother - and Annabel's mother - interferring in their private lives.

Glenn lived the life of a bachelor - at first, reluctantly - then eventually, fully - when he moved to New Orleans.

Glen was book keeper/accountant for a medim-sized hardware chain in New Orleans - did very well with them and gave them very much in return.

Over the last 40 years of his life - spent mostly in New Oreans - Glenn associated with a very lovely lady of Creole descent - Katherine. We do not know if we have cousins from this relationship - we have never asked. Katherine was always very lovely to Glen - for that we will always be grateful. Katherine died in 2000 - now Glen has gone to find her again.
