Centenarian counts George W. as family

Cousin George W. Bush of Washington, D.C., may not have been among family members attending the 100th birthday party Tuesday of Lucille Marjorie Stillman Dossett in Ocean Springs, but their relationship is a thing of pride for the Stillman family.
The genealogy of the Stillman and Bush clans, as detailed on its own Web site, identifies Lucille Stillman, who was born Nov. 8, 1905, as a sixth cousin to the U.S. president.
Both are descendants of George Stillman, who immigrated from England about 1685. The link formed in 1791 when Stillman's great-granddaughter, Lydia Newcomb, married Timothy Bush Jr., never to know that their great-great-great-grandson (George Bush) and his son (George W.) would become U.S. presidents.
Lucille Stillman knows, though, which may have influenced her favorite saying that, "This will go down in history," said nephew Bill Stillman of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
When her family moved to Biloxi in 1924, Lucille Stillman was 19 and held jobs at Peoples Bank, First Biloxi Bank and Brumfields Clothing Store.
Stillman family members from across the country celebrated her Nov. 8 birthday with a party at the Samaritan House in Ocean Springs, hosted by the honoree's friends and fellow Samaritan House residents.
Attendees included her younger brother Alfred, 91, a longtime Biloxian and past elder of the First Presbyterian Church, now living in West Plains, Mo.; his son, Bill Stillman, a 1960 graduate of Biloxi High School; Lucille Stillman's children Jerry Dossett and Marjorie "Sissie" Karen Dossett of Ocean Springs, plus many of her seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Lucille Stillman's longtime goal of living to age 100 has been accomplished, said Bill Stillman, by a combination of "want to" and encouragement from her longtime friend, Dr. Bill Wansley of Biloxi, "who convinced her she would do so with a little help."
At her party, when someone asked her advice for others who want to live to 100, she answered, "Stick with it one day at the time."
