At the present there is no factual information regarding the first member of our Hall family who came from England. A genealogy book we have listing known Halls from England shows they came from the Midlands and Northern England.
The factual record of the family begins with Isaiah and Sarah Hall, he being born February 20, 1759 and she on February 4, 1759, both in Rhode Island. They had ten known children the eighth being Rowland Hall born March 31, 1796. He married Betsey Stillman and they lived on a homestead in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains at a place called Glenfield in northwestern New York. Rowland lived to the ripe old age of 87 but Betsey died at 53.
Four of their children remained in Glenfield. The oldest son, Egbert went off to fight in the Mexican War, was killed and is buried at Montamoras, Mexico. Two other sons joined and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. One named Porter served about two and one-half months and was discharged with a disability. He returned to Glenfield and settled there with his wife Mary. The younger of the two, Monroe died from disease less than two months after mustering in while with Company C of the 3rd Battalion, Blk River Artillery. The unit was at Fort Carroll in Washington, D.C. as part of the defense of the city. A daughter Louisa married Monroe Young. There were two sons born to them, one in Michigan and the other back in New York. Another son Frank married and his wife Martha had at least three children. A daughter Esther married George Nelson Beach. They had a son named Henry and three daughters.

The rest of the children moved off to different places and states. Son Roland "Alfonso" moved to Utica, New York. He had at least three daughters by his wife Julie Robinson.
Son Whitford married in Glenfield but moved west to Illinois then to Beatrice, Nebraska where he became the owner of a fine farm. He and his wife Frances had two children. A daughter Hattie that died at 5½ months of age in Illinois and a son Freeman who died in his 32nd year leaving a wife and three children. His wife Rosemond sent their oldest daughter to live with her relatives and raised the two youngest by herself while trying to make a living. Emma married Almond Cook and had five sons and one daughter. They were Egbert, Laverne, Edith, Albert, Fred and Clifford. She lived in Illinois where the four youngest children were born and later moved to Nebraska. A death record and obituary for Egbert indicates he wandered the country after his wife of three years died. He ended up dying of pneumonia and homeless in LeCenter, Minnesota during the winter of 1915.

The son of Rowland who became my Great Grandfather, Jerome Bonaparte, was born December 7, 1829. He married Sarah Ellingsworth in Glenfield, New York on January 9, 1853. They had eight children; one born in New York, six in Illinois and the last son was born after they moved to Le Sueur County, Minnesota.

The story of the Halls was of great interest to me even as a child as my father was fond of telling true stories of his family, some handed down from his own father and uncles. One of those stories started me off on a real life adventure that led me to the actual site of the Hall homestead in Glenfield, New York.

It all began with my father's brother Freeman. While he was serving in the army during WWI, a coincidence brought Harry Beach, grandson of Esther Hall, and Freeman, grandson of Jerome Hall to the same camp in South Carolina. They met and spent time together becoming friends. After the war they started a correspondence that lasted until Freeman died at which time my father, Naaman took it up. It was through these letters, which my father shared with me, that I became interested in meeting Harry and his wife Margaret. The opportunity came when we took a trip east to visit our daughter.

Harry and Margaret had no children. He was a professional photographer and this had permitted them to indulge their love of travel so they never had a really permanent home. When Harry retired they decided to return to Glenfield where Margaret still had family. That is where we found them, Living in an old house not far from the old Hall homestead. The town was much the same as it had been 100 years ago though now it was old. The surrounding farms were well kept with stone fences separating pastures, fields and woods up and down the mountain slopes. There are still lots of woods and hunting may still be good as it was when Rowland's sons hunted and trapped there.

Harry and Margaret were so pleased to see us and really gave us a feeling of family. Harry led me to an old captain's chair and said, "Sit in the chair where your great grandmother sat and smoked her clay pipe". I could relate to that since my father had that old clay pipe in his trunk back home and had showed it to me many times. They took us down the road to a small clearing in the woods where only a depression remained where the first Hall house had stood. Harry directed us deeper into the woods down a narrow sandy road to the old Seven Day Cemetery, which was well tended in the middle of a grove of tall pines. At one time there had been a church and homesteads near by. This is where Rowland, wife Betsey, two of their children, Louisa and Porter and their spouses are buried. Porter had a special headstone honoring his service in the Civil War. We took some good pictures.

Harry died not long after this visit and soon was followed by his wife so we were especially glad to have seen them and had them show us the places of our ancestors. An interesting sidelight on this trip was seeing the Hall name in so many places in towns and cemeteries along the way. It seems the Halls that stayed around Glenfield kept the line going.

The story of Jerome Bonaparte (named for Napoleon) is the one that leads to my branch of the family. For reasons unknown, perhaps he thought it was getting too crowded, Jerome decided his future lay to the west, which turned out to be near Capron, Illinois at a place called Union Corners. Several children were born there. Then for some reason Jerome decided he wanted to go back to Glenfield so he packed up the family and moved to a town near Glenfield called New Bremen where his wife Sarah's family lived before they married. It soon became clear that the move was a mistake and he wanted to go back to Illinois. The family packed up again and went to Watertown, New York where they took a boat through the Great Lakes to Chicago. From there they went by land back to Capron, Illinois. Their son Lester, who was to become my grandfather, remembered this as a great adventure, which he related to his children in later years.

While they lived in Illinois there was a diphtheria epidemic. Lester survived but his sister Sarah died. She was only seven years old. Another sister, Leona, was to die of the same disease later at age twelve in Cordova, Minnesota.

In 1872 when Lester was thirteen, Jerome moved his family from Illinois to Cordova, Minnesota by horse and wagon. The Ellingsworths, Lester's maternal grandparents, also made this move either with them or a little later. Jerome and Sarah remained in the vicinity of LeCenter, Elysian and Cordova for the rest of their lives except for a period beginning in early 1880 at which time they moved to Long Prairie in Todd County in northern Minnesota. They drove seventy-five head of sheep and some other livestock to a farm they'd rented there. Jerome started a meat market in town with the idea that his sons would work with him. However, the sons had other interests and didn't give the help that was needed so he sold it and moved back to LeCenter.

There were six living children and as they came of age they married and went their own ways. Clinton married Nellie Sycks and their first daughter was born in Lexington. At some point they relocated to Long Prairie with Jerome where their second child was born. Not long after they moved to Minneapolis and finally settled in Farmington, where eight more children where born including a set of twins. One of the twins died at birth and the other died as an infant. Jesse and family moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1912 where his last of eight children was born. Several years later for unknown reason(s) he abandoned his family (One possible reason could be his service in WW I which is noted on his grave marker). He ended up living in San Francisco where he worked as a painter. He married for a second time but nothing is known about this wife. He remained in San Francisco until his death at age eighty-three. Jerome's youngest son William married Elizabeth Gordon, an orphan girl, of Cherokee Indian heritage, who was being raised by a neighbor. She was a beautiful woman and they had seven handsome children. The oldest three were born in Minnesota. They moved to Wyoming for a time where the next three children were born and then to Clarksville, Arkansas where their youngest child was born. Clarksville is where William died at age fifty of typhoid fever, leaving his wife with the care of their six living children, a daughter having died in 1915 in Minnesota. To support the children Elizabeth bought a team of mules and earned a living by hauling railroad ties. Later she met and married Thomas Jackson Cooper and one child was born to them. Thomas and Elizabeth moved to California where they raised their family. Like William, Elizabeth died at the age of fifty, from injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Ida May married George Crook. They had four children and lived in the LeCenter area. Sometime during 1906 Ida May's Uncle Whitford Hall came to visit his family in Minnesota. His wife had died and he was lonely. He liked his niece Ida so much he bought her and George a house in Madison Lake and made his home with them. Having a lot of time on his hands he began going to the local tavern. He never had been a drinker but soon was mixing with the local drinking crowd. One of them repeated some gossip about Whitford and Ida, attributed to his nephew-in-law, George Crook. Whitford got upset and decided he'd make George confess and apologize. He knew George was afraid of guns so he took his gun (a .32 single shot - pistol grip rifle) with him to scare George. When he confronted him George thought he was really going to use the gun and attempted to take it away. In the ensuing scuffle the gun discharged and George took a bullet in the abdomen. The shot was fatal and Whitford was arrested, tried and sentenced to Stillwater prison. He was there for five and a half years when he was pardoned and released in July of 1916. At some point following his pardon he went to Kansas and it is believed he worked on a farm there until he died. His body was sent to Beatrice, Nebraska for burial beside his wife and son. Ida did not remain a widow long but, over the strong objections of the family, married a widower, Steve Tooker.

Clara Luella married three times but had no children. Her first husband, Will Fish died. The second, Henry Brockway, she divorced and the third was Gustav Sautter. He was the son of Jacob Sautter and the brother of Martha Sautter.

Lester married Ida Seals but after finding her in bed with another man he divorced her. Later he met Martha Sautter, the woman he would marry and live with until she died, preceding him in death by only one year.

Martha's parents came from Wortenburg, Germany. Her father Peter served in the Civil War and fought at Gettysburg. Six children were born to him and his wife Margaret. When Martha was four years old her Mother died. Her father couldn't care for all the children so the youngest were given to foster homes. Martha was given to the John Dillon family where she stayed until she was twenty-four. She was treated as a servant and had to work very hard throughout her childhood. She was never given enough clothes often lacking underclothes and shoes even in winter. She told of lighting the fire one morning and her clothes caught fire. She ran out and jumped in the stock trough and put out the fire but not before she was badly burned on her back and upper arm which scarred her for life.

Shortly after Martha met Lester she went to live with the Halls. It wasn't long before she found she was pregnant so she and Lester got married. It was a hard life for Lester and Martha. They rented and farmed other peoples land, never owning their own. Some years they barely had enough to eat and keeping warm in drafty old houses in winter was a big problem. Martha gave birth to eight children. In addition there were two other pregnancies, one resulting in a miscarriage early on and the other was stillborn at eight months. There were six boys and two girls. The boys were Freeman Lester, Naaman George, Martin Robert, William Porter, Vernon Nelson and Charles Russell. Their girls were Clara Mae and Anna Mary.

The boys worked out as soon as they were old enough and schooling ended at the sixth grade for most of them. Still with good teachers and being bright they all got a good education for that time. They were all good readers and had a natural talent for math. Naaman and William were also good at drawing. All of them had musical abilities and they all played something. The fiddle was always handy. Lester had learned from his father and so it was natural he would teach his boys. Other instruments were added as time went and money was available. This made for lots of good times at home as well as at parties around the area. Lester could do quite a good jig, which delighted me when I was a child.

A lot of time was spent hunting and fishing in order to supplement their food supply but it also was something the boys loved to do and it has remained a family pursuit to this day. Naaman would tell stories of his boyhood, of running barefoot in the woods with his brothers and cousins in the summer from dawn to dark. They learned to know all the birds and their songs and the habits of the animals. Listening to him made the woods seem a wonderful place.

He also told of missing school and church because they had no shoes. It was a long walk through the snow and cold in winter without warm clothes. He told of his father, Lester, carrying fifty-pound sacks of flour on his back from town to the farm. One time he bought a large carved chiming clock and carried that home for Martha. It became a familiar fixture wherever they lived, a symbol of their life together.

The first of the children to marry was Clara. She married Herb Stecker and they moved to Spokane, Washington. They had four children, Violet, George, Marvin and Herbert.

Four years later Anna married Albert Omer, a Syrian immigrant. He learned of land available west of Barnum, Minnesota and became the owner of a large tract. He then convinced Lester and Martha to move up there where he and Anna had built a home. In 1917 they made the move to the place that would be their home for the rest of their lives. Anna and Albert had five children, Helen, Mary, Arlo, Beatrice and Melvin.

Lester and his boys built a log house on their part of the land as well as an outbuilding. Later they would build a barn, granary and storage shed of lumber probably sawed from their own timber.

Shortly after the move Naaman was drafted as well as Freeman and Martin as we were now at war with Germany in World War I. While in France Naaman contracted influenza, which was epidemic at the time. Though he nearly died it did keep him from the front line trenches and by the time he was well the war was over. Martin was not so lucky and was in some serious battles where he became a victim of the dreaded mustard gas, which damaged his lungs causing him trouble, the rest of his life. Freeman was never sent overseas.

When the brothers were back home they were ready to marry and start families of their own. Martin returned to southern Minnesota and married Lois Carpenter making their home on a farm near Elysian, Minnesota. They had one daughter named Verna. Vernon moved in with them, helping on the farm and eventually married Lois' sister Mildred. They had no children.

William (Bill) married Gladys McCandless. She contracted TB and died shortly after the birth of their son, Melvin. Later Bill married Florence Scott whom he met while serving in the army at Fort Snelling, Hennepin County, Minnesota. They settled in her home in Minneapolis where their daughter Elaine was born.

Freeman married Gertrude Edwins. She had a daughter by a previous marriage but they had no children together. Later they were divorced.

Naaman married Beatrice Engdahl and they had two children, Eleaner and Glen. They bought land on the same road as the other family members and built a house, which became their permanent home.

Charles, being so much younger, lived at home until he was drafted for WW-II. While stationed in Louisiana he met and married Ethlyn Shelton. After the war they came back to Barnum to live with Lester and Martha until they could build their own home on the land next to Naaman's place. Two sons were born, Bernard and Lee.

The following is the information that I have on Rowland Hall and Elizabeth (Betsey) Stillman. I also have information on Rowland's siblings and parents that are not listed here.
