Life and Times of Mowry Thacher
and wife Melinda Livermore



Grandfather of Mowry Thacher - George Thacher (1754 - 1824) was born in Yarmouth, ME; graduated from Harvard in 1776; admitted to the Bar in 1778; member of the Continental Congress from 1787 - 1788 and again from 1789 - 1791 representing ME, District of MA; served as Judge in Supreme Court of MA from 1800 to 1820 and in ME from 1820 to 1824; delegate to ME Constitutional Convention in 1819.
In 1942, In honor of George Thacher's contribution to the history of the USA - a "Liberty Ship" was was commissioned, built in 49 days and launched from Long Beach, CA in June 1942 - named "George Thacher".


George Thacher was the father of Nathaniel Thacher - father of Mowry Thacher. Nathaniel Thacher married Lydia Place in circa 1801. Nathaniel Thacher died circa 1824.
Mowry Thacher was born in Gloucester, RI on June 15, 1802. With his parents he came to Hornellsville, Steuben County, NY in 1810. Mowry died in Hornellsville, November 1884.
Mowry was married to Melinda Livermore on May 1, 1828 by Reverend George Hornell - son of Judge George Hornell - for whom Hornellsville was named.

From his marriage to the day of his death, Mowry Thacher lived in the same house - in Hornellsville, NY - located at the foot of Cemetery Hill where Main Street and Almond Road unite.
