The year was 1853.  The five eldest living sons of Justin and Elizabeth Carpenter embarked with their families on a month long covered wagon trek     Dorothy Kathryn Young   Florence Mae Zoesch
to the fertile land of Central Wisconsin, relocating from their homes in Lexington, Ohio.  The brothers and their families were: Isaac; Jeremiah and     1899     1998   1916
his wife Wilamina; Daniel, his wife Margaret and their infant son Isaac; Justin, his wife Caroline and their infant daughter Amanda; and, Timothy.
Isaac, the eldest, was 27, and Timothy, the youngest, was 16.  The wagon barely made 25 miles on the trip’s first day, stopping in Galion, Ohio.     Florence Eliz. Carpenter   Lawrence Edward Carpenter
Crossing the Wisconsin River by ferry at Sauk City, they reached their final destination, a settlement in Franklin Township in Sauk County just north     1901     1988   1915
of the Village of Plain.  Originally called ”Carpenter Settlement”, the community later became White Mound.  The brothers settled on properties     1920   1940
adjacent to one another, filed claims at the nearest government office in Dodgeville and established farms.     Martin David Bingner   June Louise Dunbar

Jeremiah and Wilamina returned to Ohio but were replaced by brother John Hiram, who settled in White Mound in 1863 after an enlistment with the
43rd Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.  Returning to Lexington to marry Julia Culley in 1864, John Hiram took his bride back to White Mound to join his     Theodore Ralph Carpenter   Myron Miner Carpenter
four brothers.  Eventually, many of the Carpenter clan moved south to Spring Green, Wisconsin.     1912       1923
